5 out of 5 stars Compact design great for our nursery   March 8, 2010
Towlegirl (Lebanon, NH)
I ordered the Simplehuman Slim Plastic 10.5 gal Step Can for soiled cloth diapers in our nursery. Since we're still waiting on baby to arrive, this initial review is for ease of assembly & use. The product came unassembled in 2 pieces, the can and the lid. The lid was a little difficult for me to attach but my husband had no issues putting it together. The lid is secure and extremely quiet when it closes. I like the fact that there is a small hydraulic mechanism that has the lid close slowly as opposed to slamming shut. Also, you have the ability to have the lid remain in the open position should you need it to stay open. The locking top is also a good idea when our little one starts to explore.

I purchased Blueberry Diaper Pail Liner/Laundry Bags to use with this trash can and the liners fit perfectly. I'm extremely happy with this purchase and look forward to using it when our baby arrives.

5 out of 5 stars Best Can, great price!   March 1, 2010

I was looking at buying a stainless steel garbage can to match the rest of my kitchen, but heard great things about this garbage can. I thought, it's only $40 (purchased from Crate and Barrel) so why not, I'll try it. I LOVE IT. It blends into my cherry wood and black kitchen perfectly (I bought the black can). You can lock the garbage can if you need to. It is easy to put a new bag in, the top doesn't come off. Well built, nice look, love how can closes slowly. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect size and shape   March 1, 2010

My Mum and her partner had a series of unsatisfactory bins so I bought them this one.

They love it - which is important as Bill simply wouldn't have used it otherwise.

Easy to clean and fits nicely. Great price too.

Very pleased.

3 out of 5 stars Nice can but not long lasting.   January 24, 2010

This trash can is great in concept. It has a step mechanism for hands-free tossing and lid-shox technology which keeps it from slamming shut and then it can lock to keep out nosy pets or children. However, the step/hinge/lid mechanism isn't very sturdy and ours hasn't lasted more than a couple of years. We are still on the hunt for a garbage can that will last five years or more. May try the iTouchless kind.

1 out of 5 stars The packaging! The insert!   January 5, 2010

It's hard to believe this item is manufactured by a company specializing in the environmentally-sensitive processing of trash and calling itself 'simplehuman.' The product is, first, simply over-packaged, from the weight of the cardboard box to the yardage of shrinkwrap and bubblewrap. Totally overdone, more protection for this plastic item with no electronic parts than was my Samsung tv when it came from Amazon (and that was adequately packaged!). Then, also shipped on my dime, is the insert. It's the most expensive cardstock, and it's 32 pages long! It's in full- color (oh the ink!) and dedicated exclusively to the extravagent promotion of all the trash-processing products manufactured by simplehuman, photographed at one or two per page, showcased as if they were a Jaguar or BMW. There's a page that simply asserts that the products close ever-so-quietly. There's a whole page picturing a bathtub and their rack across it. I know the cost of printing and would not be surprised if the insert cost as much to produce as the trash can. And I unwittingly and unwillingly paid for it! Or rather, me and the environment paid for it, was my thought as I vainly looked for a hint in the worthless insert as to the trick to snapping the lid onto the body of the thing. But that truly helpful information was missing. I am hoping simlehuman reads these ratings and wakes up. If they want to promote more of their products to a person who just bought and paid for one, could they make the promotion product lighter, cheaper, and simpler? And maybe they could ask if we buyers actually want one, on the order page?
